Name Derivation and History
An English land explorer named Edward John Eyre was the first who visited the area that we now call Eucla around 1841. A couple of years later, it was discovered by the president of the Marine Board of South Australia and the Australian explorer named John Forrest. In 1877, the locality of Eucla was established as Overland Telegraph's manual repeater station. There are two different beliefs when it comes to the origin of Eucla's name. One theory claims that it came from "yinculyer", an Aboriginal word that refers to the rising of Venus while the other theory claims that it came from a Mirning word that means bright. read more
Geography
The town of Eucla is situated adjacent to the Eucla Pass and is located above the Roe Plains. It is near the Great Australian Bight and the Great Victoria Desert.
Attractions
A tourist favorite in Eucla is the Old Telegraph Station. Located in the southern part of the town, the Old Telegraph Station of Eucla was considered to be one of the most important telegraph stations on the line. Now, it is simply a collection of old stone wall remnants that slightly disappear in the white sand dunes of the Great Australian Bight. Prior to the invention of the Morse Code, the South Australian staff of the Old Telegraph Station used a different code that they called "Victorian Alphabet" while the West Australian staff used "Universal Code".
